Centre for Kanuri Ajami and Qur`anic Studies was established around May 2022. Prior to that, the Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Umar Kyari Sandabe has set up a Technical Committee to work out the modalities for establishing the Centre. The committee went round some Universities in the Country to study the structures and responsibilities of similar Centres and finally submitted its report to the Vice Chancellor who subsequently established the Centre.

Objectives

1. To develop a research agenda, conduct and diversify research and coordinate dissemination of the findings on Kanuri Ajami tradition, its history and culture.
2. To be a Centre of excellence that will support research, documentation and presentation of its findings to the public, researchers, and students locally, Nationally and Internationally.
3. To establish linkages and promote scholastic partnership and collaborative researches with universities and other regional and International Institutions and Centres that work on Sub-Saharan African Ajami tradition and Qur`anic studies.
4. To strengthen the use of ICT and media in the preservation and sustainability of Kanuri Ajami tradition and Qur`anic Studies.
5. To bridge the existing gaps between the traditional and modern scholars through the use of Ajami writings and modern Qur`anic Studies.
6. To facilitate the reform and integration of the Sangaya educational system in order to restore and promote the intellectual heritage of Kanem Borno.
7. To Integrate the Sangaya scholars into the intellectual activities of the Centre.
8. To encourage access to skills as a strategy of economic empowerment;
9. To organize capacity building for Kanuri Ajami scholars, Qur’anic Interpreters, Imams, Judges, Preachers and Interpreters, institutional/volunteer security outfits who would be competent and efficient enough to disseminate Islamic teachings everywhere without misinterpretations or possible deviations.
10. To enhance healthy relationship between the Centre and the community through organizing short-term courses on some aspects of Kanuri Ajami and Qur’anic studies for various segments of the society.
11. To develop appropriate curriculum and adequate examination system for Qur’anic schools with a view to aligning them with the national policy on education.
12. To develop appropriate model of public enlightenment and sensitization programmes on the teachings of the Quran aimed at creating better understanding and good social relationship.
13. To develop and maintain a robust, credible and up-to-date database of Kanuri Ajami and Arabic manuscripts to support research.
14. To publish journal papers of national and international standard on Kanuri Ajami and Qur’anic studies;
15. To encourage Muslims to further their Islamic knowledge in every field of human endeavour.
